Is Tony Robbins A Scam Artist Or Just A Good Salesman

Is Tony Robbins a scam artist? People tell me about his events, and I begin to wonder. I like watching Tony Robbins Videos and when I see him promoted on TV programs . People love him. They say his show will motivate you to change your life forever.

That is great if it really works. I have been to motivational seminars before, and I know they inspire you, but it doesn’t last. You go home fired up and for a week or two it’s great. Then, it seems to wear off.

So, I wonder if the same thing happens after attending Tony Robbins events. Tony has filmed people and followed up a year later to see if the life of that person changed in his I Am Not Your Guru documentary.

Is Tony Robbins A Scam Artist

Tony Robbins Is Known Worldwide – But Is Tony Robbins A Scam Artist?

Tony Robbins never attended college, and has no formal training in any medical or mental health field. So where did his skill set come from? Tony Robbins developed his motivational program based on skills he learned from Jim Rohn and John Grinder. He employed the teachings of both to create his own programs. He is basically self taught.

By using motivational methods to change his mindset, Tony improved his own achievements and began teaching his methods to others. He created a set of audio tapes early in his career that ultimately lead to working with other motivational speakers and professionals. He was teaching others to become unstoppable from the inside out.

People all over the world recognize the name Tony Robbins. He is a well known motivator, and has written at least 7 books. His fortune is estimated to be 500 million in 2020. A man that has made that kind of money has to have plenty of satisfied customers.

Is Tony Robbins A Scam Artist?

Tony Robbins seminars range from $650 for general admission to $2995 for high end VIP tickets. One event in Dallas in 2016 caused 5 people to be hospitalized from  walking his hot coals “Firewalk”.They claimed that these people weren’t in the right frame of mind. Over 7000 had successfully walked the “firewalk, according to Tony Robbins officials. So, apparently the motivation seminar did not work for those 5 people.

The “Unleash The Power Within” [UPW ]seminars are a 2 day event that produce some 9 million annually for Tony. They do have a money back satisfaction guarantee that you have to be present to claim on day 2. So, you can experience the seminar risk free. If you go, you will be required to participate in the high energy actions during the event.

Is Tony Robbins A Scam Artist? His Live Events Drew Huge Crowds!

I have not yet attended a Tony Robbins live event, but I have watched many of his youtube videos. By doing that, I have a pretty good idea of Tony’s methods and what a live event would involve to a certain extent. Of course I would expect more energy and noise at the live event. And knowing that makes me wonder if I could actually take 6 days in a row of that emotional intensity.

Personally, I don’t like the crowded events. I go to enjoy the event, not to meet everybody there. And I am sure the constant involvement with strangers would not be pleasant for me. I am not an introvert, but I do like my space. So, I likely won’t be attending any of Tony’s events anytime soon.

Many of Tony’s videos are recorded at live events. People expect Tony to change their life. But, after 6 days of public brainwashing with everything geared toward changing how you think about yourself, it should certainly have an effect.

Is Tony Your Kind Of Therapist?

It is a different way of accomplishing what a good therapist would do in many one hour sessions, and likely a lot cheaper. But, only if you don’t fall for the strong selling of future events when you attend Tony’s live events.. This has been reported by many people who have attended his events.

What is the difference between Tony’s live events and the therapist? Tony is self-taught, where a therapist has studied for years and has a degree in his field. For the record,Tony is not the only self taught motivator in the business.

Many motivators have no formal training, but they know how to pitch the old idea “it’s your fault”.  And you need me to fix the problem. It is not anything you can touch, or see, just words that help you gain confidence. It has made millions for many people for many years.

Many Motivators Have Promised To Change Your Life

It reminds me a lot of Bob Proctor and what he teaches. Both men are selling a process of rewiring your brain to think differently. In order for it to work, you have to buy into the whole process. In fact, Tony will tell you that and his team in the audience is constantly making sure everyone is involved. As I said, I have never attended one of Tony’s live events, but I have read many comments on how he controls the crowd during his shows.

Everyone is pumped up to be excited and operating on a high level, so they retain more of the material. That’s a fantastic idea because people will feel like they enjoyed it more if they are up and dancing and yelling. And, keeping them enjoying the show, makes them more receptive to signing up for the next event. You don’t want everyone who has paid all that money feeling like they got ripped off. This is the same for any show. You want people to feel like they got their money’s worth.

Tony Is Not Perfect But Is He A Scam Artist?

At one event Tony is challenged for a remark about the #MeToMovement. He received a lot of negative press over the reactions he had when this woman spoke up. She was a victim of an attack at a younger age, so she felt that Tony did not really understand the real purpose behind the movement.

Tony ended up apologizing for the remarks, but it was clear he would have to apologize more than once. The remarks were upsetting to many people. They even made Tony realize he misunderstood the real message of the #MeToMovement.

I think it basically comes down to this. If you feel like you can be changed by these events, then you will probably feel you got your money’s worth. If you are skeptical and you feel you won’t buy into the event helping you, you won’t feel like you got your money’s worth. It would probably be better if you avoided the event.

Are His Books Worthwhile Or Is Tony Robbins A Scam Artist?

I have watched many videos that Tony has produced and also read one of his two books on financial help.I didn’t read his first book called  Money, Master The Game. But I did read Unshakeable.

Unshakeable is a very easy to read book that goes into great detail explaining how mutual funds and 401k plans take advantage of all of us through hidden fees.

Utilizing the knowledge of financial experts, Tony shows how to choose low fee index funds to greatly increase your returns. One lesson is staying invested through market downturns is the best strategy. But, that is not easy to do. I am one who has tried to do that back in the 70’s. Many were laid off including myself, and I was watching my savings disappear as well.

It Takes A Strong Stomach To Stay Invested

Like many others, I sold my stocks trying to save what little was left and got out at the worst possible time.I was kicking myself for not getting out sooner! And when I did finally get out, I had lost most of my life savings. That bear market lasted from January of 73 to December of 74. Almost 2 years! The worst stock market downturn since the Great Depression. It was brutal.

The market turned up soon after of course. But,It was such a painful experience for me, I wanted nothing to do with the markets for years. And the markets slowly worked right back up in the next few years. But I lost because I sold and didn’t get back in.

Tony’s book would have been very helpful before the bear market. It is easy to look back now and say we should have stayed in the market, but again, it it gut wrenching painful when it looks like it will be years to get your money back, if ever.

If you are considering going to one of Tony’s events, I would recommend watching as many of Tony’s video’s as you can first, before spending on the events. Even read some of Tony’s book’s as well such as Awaken The Giant Within, and Unlimited Power.

If you are looking for motivation and open minded about changing your life, Tony will promote a change in your life. Sometimes his methods are controversial and his speech uses the “f” word quite often. I would suggest you watch his videos on youtube, and decide if Tony’s methods are for you. The reality is, Tony has changed many lives for the better.

Some people will not enjoy the methods that are used to accomplish the change. If you like the rock concert type atmosphere, then you will enjoy it. But, if you don’t like that type of peer pressure and high intensity, then it may not be for you.

When you include travel, hotel rooms, and meals as well as the cost of the event, they can be very expensive.

And it will also eliminate the travel and meal expenses. This will appeal to many people, maybe even you.

  1. Tony Robbins is known worldwide and although I haven’t gone to any of his events yet, I would like to go in the near future. Yes, I know that there is much more needed than just a motivational speech to be succesful. But being motivated is an important part of it all. I could not think of Robbins as a scam artist.

    • Hi Ann,

I always thought that Tony was a great guy, but I only saw him on the TV talk shows. I haven’t gone to any events, but I don’t think they are my cup of tea. If I do come to a point where I just can’t think of any other way to spend a thousand bucks, I may sign up for one of the virtual events.

In the video I have shared he got a bit abusive with a woman who took offense to his comment on the #MeTooMovement and he received a lot of negative press over it. He later apologized for the comment.

He also sells some self help products on his website that are much more affordable. And being motivated is important to success, but does it last for more than a few weeks after attending his events? He has commented that they have contacted some people a year later to see if their life had changed. I am curious to hear what the results were. Stay tuned!

Thanks for leaving a comment and please stop back.

  2. Well you won’t blame people because so many has been scammed and right now they don’t know who is real and who is not. This happened with my cousin who was  scammed by crowd1. Just because they host a big program doesn’t make them real. Also people should know that just because you attend a motivational program, you should wake up like these speakers. If you think is good for you, you can attend, if you don’t think it is, then don’t.

    • Hi betieshair,

True, anymore you just don’t know who is the scam and who isn’t. Tony Robbins has been a bit controversial at times, and has his own style for sure. You can please some of the people some of the time, but not everyone all the time. He has quite a following, and many people attend over and over again. That may be the heavy promotion at each event. If you can afford it, and you think you might enjoy it, go fo it.

Thank you for takin the time to comment, and please stop back.
